….We will definitevely not tell everything but here is the most important …..
First, Mas Corbières is the magical place where we live. “We”, that is: Antoine, Gabrielle, and our four children, (some of them teenagers now), in the company of all our long-eared friends and pets: dogs, cats, hens and ducks ….
We fell in love with the place 20 years ago and ever since have been fascinated by this wild area by the river opening out onto the valley of the Valnierette.
We are both mountain guides, and we were had the idea of creating a lodge for hikers. Antoine still works abroad as a guide during the winter.
We expanded the activity with a network of friends who provide our hikers with board and lodging for the night and an excellent dinner. From Corbières, there are day hikes around the lodge, long treks following in Stevenson’s footsteps or a stage in the Saint Jacques of Compostelle trail.
Mas Corbières is also a meeting place and a training centre that we try to keep warm and friendly.
Our agricultural activities are expanding every year: organic market gardening; onions, potatoes, blueberries - and recently production of sweetened chestnut puree from ancient varieties.
Baby donkeys are born every spring, filling us with wonder …
Mas Corbières is a typical Cevennes hamlet composed of a set of dry stone buildings, some very impressive by the height of their walls, others more modest, with their covered terraces overlooking the valley.
The Mas is surrounded by fields and big gardens. The path leading down to the river is bordered with big blocks of granite.
Only a few years ago, three brothers ,” the Liron brothers” still lived here with their goats in perfect harmony with nature working and going down to the gardens carrying their tools on their shoulders. You can still feel their generous and industrious presence in this place shaped and moulded by the hand of man.
Thanks to the people of Valnières who made us feel welcome, particularly Franck Fesquet and the two shepherds Jean and Agnès Fabre, we were able to put down our roots in this little valley.
Lovers of nature and peaceful places, we had the good luck of meeting the Brunon family who are our neighbours and thanks to them we were able to buy a barn and a ruin in this pretty hamlet.
That was the starting point of a vast reconstruction project of the walls, terraces and houses of Mas Corbières.
Since then we continue the rehabilitation of the stone buildings adjoining our neighbours’ and friends’ summer houses.
The small slate-roofed barn with its threshing floor is now a lodge as is the large house situated on the vaults overlooking the valley. The upper part of the large house was heightened to be used as a silkworm factory.
